The McMos Marketing Committee Mail Order Shop (McMos)

The McMos (Marketing Committee Mail Order Shop) began in a small way when shirts and satchels bearing the Society logo sold well at the NZMTA conference in July 1986. The shop has operated from several venues. First in July 1989 Raewyn Newcomb took on the “shop keeping” - orders went to National Office but were dispatched by Raewyn.

The Shop relocated to Erwin Drok’s practice in Auckland 1991[1],  but returned to National Office in 1993 just as it was beginning to pay its way.  Richard Hopkins and Suzanne Georgantis managed and ran the shop from 1994 until 1997.  Initially the shop was financed by the Society,  but from 1992 it has been self supporting.  Stock control was instituted in 1990,  when there was an excess of stock,  and in 1991 Executive appointed Richard Hopkins to oversee and liaise on purchase of stock and assets.

When the Public Relations Committee became the Marketing Committee in 1991 Executive took over the public relations role,  leaving the Committee free to concentrate on marketing utilising the McMos material - symbols,  merchandising,  educational pamphlets,  public display kits etc.  A discount for financial members was allowed in the 1991 price list.

When the Working Party made their report in 1994 they felt the Mail Order Shop (McMos) was vital to realise the marketing goals of the Society.  Sales were high in 1994 and a new colour McMos catalogue was sent to all Marketing Liaison Officers,  so that members throughout the country could see what was available.

McMos sales continued to grow rapidly in 1995,  with the Product Decision Making Model and the Criteria for Feasibility of new products guidelines proposed by Richard Hopkins approved by the Executive.  Richard Hopkins gave up responsibility for the shop in 1997,  when it was handled by the Marketing Committee.  McMos have always operated the shop at conferences both in NZ and at WCPT Congresses.   Erwin Drok showed particular perseverance in getting the shop to snow bound Christchurch in 1992[2]!  There were stalls at WCPT Congresses in Sydney in 1987,  in London in 1990,  and in Washington in 1995 where new promotional material was used to promote physiotherapy in NZ.  The shop is now handled at National Office by Suzanne Georgantis.
