Since its beginning the Journal has progressed from a chatty production with news of members and articles about treatments (frequently written by doctors) to become increasingly professional with the Journal publishing the recent research based articles written by well qualified physiotherapists.

Many of the features of earlier Journals have been taken over by the Newsletter such as positions vacant, locums and practices for sale. Apart from the four peer-reviewed articles which are published with each issue there are other items.
Every issue has an Editorial, sometimes written by a guest.
Book Reviews have been a constant feature, almost all the time the Journal has been published.
Abstracts from post-graduate theses or conference presentations have been a fairly constant feature from 1971 Treatment notes in November 1971, November 1975, and August 1988.
Letters to the Editor - one in 1983, then nearly every issue from 1986 to the present.
The Health Department Library featured books which could be borrowed from November 1969 until December 1985.
Positions vacant, locums and practices for sale both in New Zealand and overseas were featured from the beginning, with a sharp reduction in number in 1980. There were almost none until November 1986, and then only a few. In recent years agencies employing personnel in other countries have advertised.
Courses were advertised from time to time - there was a complete list of courses listed in November from November 1977 until November 1982 A few courses were advertised in April 1988.
Advertisements for university courses gradually came in, the first Australian one in August 1988.

Personal Notes were printed in November 1971, November 1975, August 1988
Branch Notes from November 1963 to November 1980.
School Reports were printed regularly from May 1973 until April 1990, with students also writing notes in November 1969, November 1971, November 1974, November 1976. Lists of graduates in August 1984.
“In other Journals” began in April 1995 and continued in April 1996, August 1996, December 1996, April 1997, and August 1997.
WCPT featured in almost every issue until August 1987.
Conference programmes were published from time to time.
Obituaries and distinctions awarded were published as necessary.
An extra colour sheet about “News and Views” inserted in the middle of the journal was tried for a few issues from December 1984 to December 1985. It proved too expensive and was transferred to the Newsletter.
Otago Polytechnic Students’ Research Projects were published in December 1990 and December 1992.
Manuscript Requirements - every August from 1988 till 1996. Since the change to the American Psychological Association (4th Ed.) method of referencing they have been published in every issue of the Journal.
Indexing. The Journal was first indexed by Margaret Gibson Smith (Librarian Auckland Technical Institute) in 1976, with the intention to continue indexing after every 10th Publication with printing costs to come from the Journal Funds of the Society. [1]. It was again compiled by Margaret Gibson Smith in 1991, and the index of Volumes 19-15 1991 - 1997 was published in December 1997.
One item published in the December 1983 issue was a note that the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature added three major physical therapy journals to its list of journals indexed including the NZJP.[2]
In March 1985 the Canterbury Medical Library advised that funding for indexing had come from the Dept. of Health, the National Library of New Zealand, the Medical Research Council and the four major medical libraries. A Committee was formed to oversee this, but it was done by a contractor in Wellington. Editors were asked include brief author abstracts in each article to include these for the majority of articles in the database.[3].
In March 1991 Executive discussed the need for a Journal Index update, which was done by November 1991 by Margaret Gibson Smith of the Auckland Medical School Library. It was distributed with the December 1991 Journal.
