Council discussed the question whether drugs could be administered by physiotherapists under the direction of a Medical Officer in 1974,  and obtained legal opinion about this.  A Ministry of Health review raised the same question  in March 1975.  It was decided that physiotherapists could do this,  it is only if they prescribe and administer drugs while not under medical supervision that there could be any trouble.  Physiotherapists contributed to the Revision of Medicines Act in 1992,  Pip Wade and Richard Hopkins attended meetings in Auckland in Christchurch and formulated a reply.  A new Prescribers Advisory Committee was established in September 1999 to establish generic criteria which any health professional group must meet in preparing an application for prescribing drugs.  Opinions were sought from branches,  SIGs,  College of Physiotherapy and schools with a view to preparing a paper.  The matter was still under consideration at the end of 1999.
